Can You Put Furniture in a Dumpster? What You Need to Know

Getting rid of old furniture seems like it should be easy. Then you actually try to do it and you realize your trash bin isn’t an option (that couch isn’t fitting no matter how you turn it)

And the first thing that comes to mind is: what about that dumpster sitting in the driveway or behind the building?

Can you just throw the furniture in there?

Sometimes, yeah.

But it depends on a few things: the type of dumpster, whose rules apply to it and what kind of furniture you’re actually trying to get rid of.

Before you drag your old sofa or mattress outside, it’s worth knowing what you’re dealing with.

Can You Put Furniture in a Dumpster?

Some dumpsters will take furniture without blinking. Others will charge you a fee for it or just not allow it at all.

If you’ve rented a roll off dumpster; maybe for a renovation or a big cleanout, you usually have more room to work with, though the rental company still decides what’s allowed.

Apartment dumpsters and regular residential ones are stricter. They’re built for everyday household trash, not bulky stuff, and property managers often have specific rules about what counts as too big or too much.

So don’t just assume. Call whoever’s in charge, the property manager, the rental company, your local waste provider and ask first.
